What is loft insulation?
Loft insulation is a barrier of material (normally wool/loft roll) in your roof space that traps heat. It can either be laid between the joists (the horizontal beams along the floor of your attic) or the rafters (the angled beams that support the roof)
How do we install it?
We install between 100-150mm layer of insulation between the joists, then it’s time to lay more insulation over the top at a 90-degree angle where possible to take it up to the recommended depth of 270mm. Starting from the furthest point from the hatch, spread the insulation over the top of your joists, leaving ideally no gaps between the strips.
Generally this install takes no longer than 1 day.
Benefits of loft insulation?
Around 25% of heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated home. Insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is an effective way to reduce heat loss and reduce your heating bills.
Installed correctly, loft insulation should pay for itself many times over in its 40-year lifetime.
Things to consider?
Insulating between the joists of your loft will keep your house warmer, but make the roof space above colder due to reducing the amount of warm air passing into the loft.
This means pipes and water tanks in the loft space could be more likely to freeze, so you will need to insulate them where possible.
The cooler air in your insulated loft could mean that cold draughts come through the loft hatch. To prevent this, fit an insulated loft hatch and put strips of draught-excluding material around the hatch edges.
